Congratulations to Ms. Raquel Brown for being selected as the Volunteer of the Month for November 2026.

Ms. Brown completed CASA training on January 27, 2026, and accepted her case assignment on February 16, 2026. She was assigned to a sibling group who entered care due to Neglect/Dependency/Shelter Inadequate and physical abuse. After receiving initial information about the children, Linda*, age 13, and her younger brother, Joseph*, age 11, and learning that they were placed in separate foster homes, Ms. Brown immediately and willingly agreed to advocate for both children.

Within her first month on the case, Ms. Brown arranged to observe visits between the children and their mother in the home. She met each child individually and gathered important information from their mother, Ms. Carter, which revealed significant grief due to multiple losses. Ms. Brown recognized that therapy would be essential before reunification could safely occur.

She built a strong working relationship with the family therapist supporting Ms. Carter and Linda, ensuring that communication remained consistent and focused on the children’s needs. Ms. Brown also advocated persistently for Joseph, who was in the 5th grade but reading at a 1st-grade level. She attended all school board meetings and played a key role in securing the academic support he needed.

Ms. Brown transported the children for sibling visits and for visits with their mother, ensuring they maintained meaningful connections. She never missed a court date and attended every hearing in person, demonstrating reliability, professionalism, and unwavering commitment.

In court, Ms. Brown advocated not only for the children but also for their mother. She clearly articulated the support and services Ms. Carter needed to successfully care for her children, ensuring the court understood the full picture of the family’s needs. Ms. Brown’s calm, composed presence and her ability to express concerns with clarity often left the room genuinely impressed.

The children have developed a close relationship with Ms. Brown. Linda feels comfortable and open in sharing her feelings with her, a reflection of the trust and emotional safety Ms. Brown has created.

Since being assigned, Ms. Brown has shown exceptional dedication, compassion, and advocacy. Her work has made a significant impact on this family, and she exemplifies the highest standards of Capital Area CASA.

Congratulations, Ms. Brown, on this well-deserved recognition. We proudly thank you for your outstanding service and dedication.

Proud Advocate Supervisor,

Sheila Ledoux-Scott
