  The Need for CASA

Each year thousands of children enter into complex child protection and juvenile court proceedings through no fault of their own. These innocent victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment belong to no one as they silently wait for the court to decide their future.

Many of these children become victims a second time, lost in an overburdened, underfunded system that cannot pay close attention to each child whose life is in its hands.  Sometimes a child can remain adrift in foster care for months, even years. Each year, more than 300 children are in foster care in East Baton Rouge Parish.

What We Do:

The CASA program recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to speak up for abused and neglected children and advocate for their timely placement into safe and permanent homes.

CASA volunteers are trained to give special representation to abused children so they will not fall through the cracks of the juvenile justice and child protection systems.

A CASA volunteer spends time and gets to know one child or one group of siblings and find out what their needs are.

A CASA volunteers speaks with caseworkers, foster parents and others involved in the child's life to gather information, ensure the child's needs are being met and ensure that he or she is placed in a safe, permanent home quickly.

A CASA volunteer makes recommendations to a judge about what is in the child's best interests.
